The names of the Nobel laureates in medicine have been announced. This year, two American scientists jointly received the Nobel Prize in Medicine. They are Victor Ambrose and Gary Ruvkun.

This information was reported on the website of the Nobel Authority on Monday (October 7).

The two shared the Nobel Prize for their discovery of microRNAs and their role in post-transcriptional gene regulation, authorities said.

Earlier last year, two Nobel Prizes were awarded in medicine and physiology. They are – Katalin Carrico and Drew Weissman.

As per tradition, the announcement of the Nobel laureates starts on the first Monday of October every year. As such, today (Monday) the Nobel Prize in Medicine was announced for the first time.

The names of Nobel laureates in 6 categories are announced on six days of this month. The Nobel Peace Prize was announced from Norway. Other awards such as literature and economics are announced from Sweden.

The prizes in medicine, physics, chemistry, literature and peace are named after the Swedish scientist Alfred Nobel and from his legacy. Swedish industrialist Nobel was the inventor of dynamite. The award was started in 1901, five years after his death.

In 1901, German biologist Emil von Behring was awarded the first prize for his research on effective serum therapy against diphtheria.

The Nobel Foundation administers the award. It is universally recognized as the most prestigious award in medicine. Every year on December 10th in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, this prize is officially awarded on the anniversary of the death of the scientist Nobel.

The winning scientist received the award from His Majesty the King of Sweden. Each Nobel laureate receives a green gold medal plated with 24 carat gold, a diploma and a monetary award. As of 2024, the prize money for the Nobel Prize is 1.1 million Swedish krona, which is equal to 1.35 million US dollars.

A Nobel Prize is shared by no more than three individuals, although the Nobel Peace Prize may be awarded to more than three institutions. Nobel Prizes are not awarded posthumously, but if a person is awarded the prize and dies before receiving it, the prize is awarded.

Since the economics prize was first awarded 122 years ago in 1901 and 68 years after Erong in 1969, 627 Nobel Prizes have been awarded to 1,000 individuals and institutions. Among them there are 965 individuals and 27 institutions. Five individuals and two organizations have won the Nobel Prize multiple times.

Only the International Committee of the Red Cross has received the Nobel Prize three times. Peaceful every time. The years are: 1917, 1944 and 1963.

The obverse of the medal awarded bears an inscribed portrait of Alfred Nobel, similar to medals awarded for physics, chemistry or literature. But the other side is different. On the side is the portrait of a brilliant physician, who holds an open book in his lap and at the same time tries to quench the thirst of a girl with flowing water from a stone chest.

1915-1918, 1921, 1925, 1940-1942 a total of 9 years no Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded. Most of the years were not given due to World War I and II.

In 1939, Austrian-born German politician Adolf Hitler banned medical scientist Gerhard Domag from accepting his rightful Nobel Prize. He later received the diploma and medal he deserved, but did not get his money back.
