They met at Tejgaon office in Dhaka on Thursday (October 31).

The Chief Adviser praised Lafave’s performance and service as a top diplomat. He also appreciated his sincere efforts to advance Bangladesh-US relations at a crucial time.

“I am very proud to be a witness to history,” said Helen Lafave, recalling the student-led mass uprising in July-August.

Meanwhile, the US Embassy’s Charge d’Affaires handed over a letter from US Foreign Minister Anthony Blinken to Professor Yunus.

He told the chief adviser in the meeting that the United States is accelerating the rehabilitation of Rohingyas from Bangladesh camps to North American countries.

Discussions focused on judicial reforms, South Asian power connectivity, counter-terrorism, efforts to repatriate billions of dollars stolen from Bangladesh during the autocratic regime, civil bureaucracy reforms and labor issues.

LaFave said that the United States is already helping Bangladesh recover the money and bring it back to Bangladesh with advice and other assistance. “It is difficult to return stolen money, but it is not impossible,” he said. “We will definitely do it,” said the chief adviser.

The interim government is also committed to comprehensive labor reforms, the chief adviser said.

In an effort to strengthen relations between the two friendly countries, several senior US officials will visit Bangladesh in the next few months, said Helen LaFave, charge d’affaires of the US Embassy.
